不刊之论
Meaning
An unalterable opinion; a definitive statement.
Character by character
Origin and story
Literary usage刊 here has the older sense of cutting away or revising, rather than publishing. An 不刊之论 is consequently an argument so sound that it does not need alteration, not an opinion forbidden to appear in print. The Ministry of Education dictionary records this established sense.
A related early formulation appears in Yang Xiong's reply to Liu Xin, where a work is praised as an enduring, unalterable book. That is 不刊之书, not the exact idiom 不刊之论, so it is evidence for the underlying usage rather than proof of the four-character phrase's first occurrence.
