legend

The Hou Hanshu’s account of Fei Changfang tells of an old medicine seller who hangs a vessel at his stall. When the market closes, he jumps inside it. Other people do not notice, but Fei sees the marvel from above and approaches him respectfully. The old man later takes Fei into the vessel, where the tale describes a splendid hall with abundant food and wine.

This is an immortal legend preserved within a historical collection, not evidence that doctors could enter gourds. The medicine seller's hanging vessel became an emblem of medical practice. Combined with 济世, helping people, 悬壶济世 praises a physician's work in relieving suffering. The full phrase is a later expression drawing on the story, not a quotation spoken by Fei.
