鞭辟入里

Origin and story

The antecedent 鞭辟近裡 appears in the Shi Xun section of Henan Chengshi Yishu (河南程氏遺書), volume 11, collected in the works of the Cheng brothers. The teaching urges learners to press inward and apply learning to themselves, linking close questioning and reflection with ethical cultivation.

Here 鞭辟 means urging or spurring oneself on. It is not an account of a whip physically piercing someone's body. The later form 鞭辟入里 extends the idea of penetrating study to analysis that reaches a problem's essential details. Today it commonly praises a perceptive argument or explanation.
