Historical account

In the Zuozhuan, Duke Xiang's thirty-first year, Zichan of Zheng criticizes Jin's inadequate accommodation for visiting states. He recalls the better practice under Duke Wen: guest quarters were carefully maintained, attendants cared for vehicles and horses, and visitors did not fear theft or discomfort. Guests arrived as though returning home.

The phrase belongs to Zichan's argument about the responsibilities of a powerful host. Its modern use retains the central idea: practical care and a considerate welcome make an unfamiliar place feel comfortable. Hotels and restaurants use it often, but it equally suits a private host.
