兰质蕙心

Origin and story

Fragrant plants provide the language of inward refinement: lan suggests an orchid-like nature, and hui a fragrant, admirable heart. Wang Bo's Qixi fu uses the related ordering 蕙心兰质. The exact form 兰质蕙心 appears in Yang Yuqing's Tang poem Passing the Grave of Yingying, a Young Entertainer.

That poem remembers a woman whose music has fallen silent and whose lonely grave is already covered with withered grass. Its closing question asks where her lovely character has gone. The expression therefore carries a literary history of valuing a woman's qualities, not merely her appearance. In modern use it remains an elegant, rather old-fashioned compliment.
