Origin and story
Literary imageThe Ministry of Education dictionary traces the image to Lu Lun's Tang poem about Pengzu Tower, Fude Pengzu lou song Yang Zongde gui Xuzhou mu. Its opening describes four doors and eight windows filling the building with light, so luminous that it seems close to a celestial realm. The poem supplies the image, although it does not contain the final four-character expression as a continuous phrase.
Later Song poetry uses 八面玲珑 itself. From physical openness and brightness on every side, the expression developed a social meaning: handling people and situations smoothly from every direction. Depending on context, that can suggest tact or excessive eagerness to please.
