蓬荜生辉

péng bì shēng huī

A humble abode shines; honored by a guest’s presence.

Literary image

The humble dwelling and sudden brightness have a Tang poetic parallel in Dou Xiang's poem thanking Wei Qing for a gift. He describes receiving a luminous ornament and being startled by the light filling his rough home. The poem then evokes treasures and abilities that deserve recognition.

The Ministry of Education dictionary cautiously connects this image with the later four-character expression. Ming writings use the exact phrase to acknowledge gifts or welcome visitors. 蓬荜 evokes a poor doorway made from plants and brushwood, but in polite speech it modestly names the speaker's own home. The guest or gift, rather than expensive decoration, is what brings the honor.
