朝乾夕惕

zhāo qián xī tì

Morning effort, evening caution; relentless diligence.

朝morning
乾effort
夕evening
惕caution
Classical teaching

The image comes from the third line of the Qian hexagram in the Book of Changes. A gentleman works diligently throughout the day and remains watchful in the evening, as though aware of danger; this conduct avoids blame. 乾乾 expresses sustained effort here, while 惕 conveys vigilance. The passage describes an attitude appropriate to a demanding position, not a separate adventure involving a named historical person.

The later condensed expression joins daytime diligence with evening caution. In chapter 18 of Dream of the Red Chamber, Yuanchun uses it when urging her father to be conscientious in his official duties. It is elevated language for persistent, responsible attention, not simply being busy every waking hour.
