Origin and story
Dramatic attestationIn the first act of the Yuan play Jin Yun Tang An Ding Lian Huan Ji, Yang Biao considers how to oppose Dong Zhuo's domination of the Han court. Dong Zhuo's powerful supporter Lü Bu makes direct action difficult. Yang Biao therefore thinks of Wang Yun as a person rich in judgment and plans, using the exact phrase 足智多谋, and invites him to discuss what to do.
The passage is a later dramatic portrayal of the late Han period, not a quotation from its contemporary historical records. It praises Wang Yun's resourcefulness rather than originating as a label for Zhuge Liang. The expression now applies broadly to people who can devise effective ways through difficult situations.
